Speaker Bios

Laurie Marbas, MD, MBA – Chronic Disease… Is it a choice??

Laurie Marbas, MD, MBA is double board certified family medicine and lifestyle medicine physician utilizing food as medicine since 2012. She has worked previously creating a new medical model combining the power of nutrient-dense foods and intensive clinical psychological therapy to treat not only food addiction but chronic disease. She currently is the Managing Editor for the Plantrician Project’s International Journal of Disease Reversal and Prevention and works closely with the journal’s Editor in Chief, Dr. Kim Williams. The journal is focused on plant-based research and bringing this important work to the forefront of modern medicine and the general public. She is also co-founder of Healthy Human Revolution whose mission is to provide the resources that will empower individuals with the knowledge, tools and mindset to successfully adopt and sustain a whole food plant based diet. In Colorado, she convinced a large hospital to create a lifestyle medicine program centered around a whole-foods, plant-based diet and showed resounding success. At another hospital, she conducted a one-month study of 26 employees on a plant-based diet. All employees were fed from the hospital’s kitchen and each individual had improvement in their health. She has spoken at the Golden VegFest in Colorado, the International Plant-based Nutrition Healthcare Conference, and other venues teaching about the value of the WFPB diet.

She received her dual degrees (MD and MBA) from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine and TTU School of Business. Laurie was awarded the Texas Tech University School of Medicine Gold Headed Cane Award, a symbol for excellence in the art of medicine and the care of patients. She wrote seven books while in medical school, six of which were in a series called “Visual Mnemonics”. These books used cartoons to help memorize vast amounts of information, which helped her when she was a mom attending medical school. She is a USAF veteran having served in the Middle East and South America. She is a wife, mom of three grown children, host of the Healthy Human Revolution podcast, author, speaker and an avid runner.

Sarina Pasricha, MD, MSCR – The Gut Brain connection and what diet and the microbiome have to do with it!!

Dr. Sarina Pasricha is a nationally recognized gastroenterologist and speaker. She graduated cum laude from Harvard University in biological anthropology and nutrition. She then attended Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine for medical school. She subsequently completed her residency and gastroenterology fellowship at the University of North Carolina where she also received a Masters of Science in Clinical Research from the Gillings School of Public Health.  Dr. Pasricha has completed additional training in motility disorders with an emphasis on constipation, fecal incontinence, irritable bowel syndrome and gut health.  She has published extensively in the most respected gastroenterology journals and has given more than 40 national presentations. In addition to receiving numerous teaching awards, she has received prestigious awards from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Robin Wilson-Smith – How a plant-based diet can help prevent cancer

Dr. Wilson-Smith completed her OB/GYN Residency at Cooper University Hospital. She then undertook a three-year Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship at Cooper University Hospital, which she completed in 2009. As a gynecologic oncologist, Dr. Wilson-Smith specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of cancers of the female reproductive system, including cervical, vulvar, vaginal, ovarian and uterine cancers.

Dr. Wilson-Smith experienced in robotic surgical procedures. Robotic surgery, often used for gynecologic procedures, can result in a quicker recovery time for patients, along with reduced post-operative pain and less scarring. Not only is Dr. Wilson-Smith is experienced in multiport and single-site robotic procedures, she  also performs complex gynecologic cases, including endometriosis and minimally-invasive adnexal surgeries.

Board certified through the American Osteopathic Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in OB/GYN and Gynecologic Oncology, she is a member of several professional organizations, including the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American Osteopathic Association, and the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists.

Dr. Wilson-Smith is married and the mother of four children, including a set of triplets. She is a native of southern New Jersey, where she still resides.

She is an advocate for her patients taking control of their health and counsels her patients on the benefits of plant based nutrition.

Karin Gibson – Plant powered from birth

Karin Gibson is a registered dietitian (certified in Sweden) who currently lives in New York City where she runs her private practice, Grazing Greens. She specializes in plant-based diets and healthy eating during pregnancy and lactation, as well as how to raise healthy, well-nourished plant-based children. Karin earned her Bachelor of Science in Dietetics from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, and has a certificate in Plant-Based Nutrition from eCornell University. She is also a mom to a toddler and pregnant with her second baby.

Anthony Masiello, NBC-HWC – Introduction and getting started on a whole food plant based diet

Anthony Masiello is a Nationally Board-Certified Health and Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC) who also holds certifications in Lifestyle Medicine, Plant-Based Nutrition, Positive Psychology, and Food Addiction, and is a member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine.

Anthony has been working in healthcare for more than 20 years. His career started as a computer scientist doing Bioinformatics for the Human Genome Project at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to help researchers develop a better understanding of humans and disease at the molecular level. After 6 years, he transitioned into Pharmaceutical Research at Novartis, so he could more directly contribute to the development of disease treatments and therapies for patients. Years later, after losing 160 pounds and reversing several serious health conditions of his own, he discovered a better way and shifted his career focus again, this time from treatment to the prevention and reversal of disease.

Anthony now works as a health coach, educator, consultant, and speaker helping individuals and organizations to prevent and reverse disease through lifestyle intervention. He co-founded the Healthy Human Revolution project to bring awareness, education, and support of these healthy lifestyle interventions to people all over the globe, Earned Health to provide individual coaching services, consulting, and to develop local community, and finally Plant Based Central to connect people everywhere with the resources they need to adopt and sustain a healthy lifestyle on a whole food plant based diet.

Anthony’s story has been featured on the Megyn Kelly Today show, on PBS, in The Huffington Post, in the bestselling book Eat to Live, and by Forks Over Knives, Runners World, and numerous radio shows, podcasts, and articles.

Kayla Gorrell – Conquering cravings

Kayla Gorrell is a certified plant based health coach, author, yoga and indoor cycling instructor. She has helped dozens of people improve their lifestyle with nutritional, physical, and emotional mental strategies. Kayla is a mom to a beautiful 3 year old girl Blair.

Kayla will keep your body relaxed and your mind alert with brief periods of breathing exercises, movements and meditation.

Karen Burzichelli, RN, CHHC

Karen has over 30 years experience as a Labor & Delivery Nurse and currently works at Virtua in Voorhees N.J. She received her BSN from Trenton State College, her Health Coaching Certificate from The Institute for Integrated Nutrition in NYC. Karen has been teaching Plant-based cooking classes over 7  years.  She Works with clients individually and in group setting teaching how to use a plant based diet to prevent and reverse disease. Karen lives with her husband in Gibbstown, mother to Twins girls and one granddaughter.

Cathy Daub

Cathy is a physical therapist who has worked with special needs children over the last 30 years. She is founder, designer, and president of BirthWorks International. She is author of Birthing in the Spirit- a human values approach to childbirth, and Doulas of Love and is co-author of the BirthWorks Childbirth Educator Manual, and the Doula Journal Workbook. Cathy facilitates childbirth education and doula workshops in the USA and overseas. She is a certified Maya Abdominal Massage therapist, is certified in pelvic bodywork, is trained in techniques of myofascial release and teaches human values, all of which she incorporates into her workshops. She brings together her many talents when working with women, helping them to integrate the mind, body, and spirit when giving birth and helping them to have more trust and faith in their bodies’ innate ability to give birth. She is a strong advocate for healthy eating and sees nutrition for pregnant women as an important factor in growing healthy babies.

Cathy is also a piano teacher and composed the lyrics and original songs for the CD Believe. She is the mother of two children and grandmother to four.
