Plant-Based Nutrition Heroes & Villains series: The New Burgers & Meat Mimics
November 5, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Have you noticed the explosion in vegan-friendly alternatives to conventional meat and dairy? These novel foods are challenging some of the tried and true food mantras (such as “eat real food” and “eat one ingredient foods”).
In this second event of the “Plant-based Nutrition Heroes and Villains,” we will talk about all the new plant-based options and what they might mean for our health. This session will include:
– An overview of the three main strategies used to create those products (plant-based ingredients combined in clever ways; use of microbes to make food ingredients; lab-grown meat)
– A scientific look at the nutritional profile and “healthfulness” of these novel foods, using Beyond Meat burgers as an example.
Our guest speaker, Chana Davis has a Ph.D. in genetics from Stanford University. She is passionate about helping people cut through the nutritional noise so they can make well-informed, healthy choices, with confidence.
FOOD: there will be a mild curry served on rice. (Sorry, no burgers!) If you would like to bring some finger food or dessert, that would be great! Please keep it all-vegan. Thank you!
TICKET: the $10 cost covers food, room rental, and Meetup fees.
MINIMUM ATTENDANCE: At least 8 people must commit to participating and buy their ticket at least 3 days ahead or the event will be canceled. Thanks for understanding!
