VegKC Restaurant Meetup – Blue Nile Ethiopian (Veg Buffet)
August 10, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
If you RSVP, please show up.
Blue Nile is located in the City Market (aka River Market) area and offers some interesting options. The food is somewhat adjusted to the American pallet, while not quite as authentic it does equate to some very good home cooked dishes.
They offer plenty of vegan menu options (more than half of the menu), including a platter that offers all the choices at once. Typical of Ethiopian food, there are no forks or spoons; instead, you scoop up the assorted dishes (which are vaguely similar to Indian food, nicely seasoned but less spicy, for those of you who’ve never had Ethiopian cuisine), using a spongy and slightly pungent injera bread made from teff grain (served here it is not gluten free, although injera can be.)
There is an assortment of interesting flavors including lentils and vegetables from potatoes, carrots, cabbage, and collard greens, to green beans as well as others. They usually have a nice onion, squash, and yellow lentil soup with the buffet. You can’t go wrong here. Blue Nile’s website (http://www.bluenilekc.com/) includes a menu.
Available on the menu they also have some delicious sambusa pastries (similar to samosas) – which they have recently changed to a veg-based recipe!!! As well as a pretty good mango juice.
They have started doing their buffet everyday until 3:00 PM and we plan on participating, note that they do have two or so meat based dishes to avoid on their buffet as it isn’t setup strictly for us. We anticipate the price being approximately 11.50 – a guess based on previous events. If you go another time with 2-3 people their sampler platter served on a huge piece of injera bread is a fun social dining experience.
Please – make the effort to keep your RSVP accurate!!! We need venues to happily continue to accommodate us. Imagine reserving most of the seats in a busy restaurant, and then showing up with only a handful of people…
If you enjoy our events as much as we do, please also consider donating a few dollars to help our volunteers cover our Meetup site costs. Contribute online (https://secure.meetup.com/vegetarian-14/contribute/) or in person.
