SUMMARY:Farm vs. Pharma: A Dietary Approach to Treating Reflux Diseases
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER: https://bit.ly/2Yqniam \nReflux disease\, both gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) and laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR)\, impacts the quality of life of millions of people. For those suffering\, symptoms can range from mild discomfort to chronic pain. Join us as otolaryngologist (ear\, nose\, and throat doctor) Craig Zalvan\, MD\, explains the differences between GERD and LPR\, discusses how most patients are treated\, and lays out the evidence for why whole food\, plant-based nutrition offers a better option than eliminating spicy foods and taking expensive medication. Hear how Dr. Zalvan and his colleagues’ research has demonstrated that a mostly plant-based diet can effectively reverse reflux disease and improve symptoms\, and how you can take steps to heal. \nCraig H. Zalvan\, MD\, is the Medical Director at the Institute for Voice and Swallowing Disorders and Chief of Otolaryngology at Phelps Hospital\, Northwell Health in Sleepy Hollow\, New York. He is a Professor of Otolaryngology at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and a partner at ENT and Allergy Associates\, LLP in New York. His book\, Laryngopharyngeal and Gastroesophageal Reflux: A Comprehensive Guide to Diagnosis\, Treatment\, and Diet-Based Approaches\, is the first to combine both fields and a diet-based approach to reflux treatment. Dr. Zalvan is also a Plant Powered Metro New York Medical Advisor. \nEvent access is by donation or free to anyone unable to contribute. Please choose the option that fits you best and join us! \nRegistrants will receive a Zoom link on the day of the event.

SUMMARY:Ask a Vegan Coach & Discussion: Holiday Edition
DESCRIPTION:We had such a great discussion last month\, I decided to run this again this month– If you’re new to being vegan or have been vegan but fell off or are just looking to challenge yourself in new ways– tonight is your night! \nI’ve been vegan for 3+ years now and love coaching people on leading this kind of lifestyle. Tonight\, however\, there will be no presentation from me\, just a Q&A time for you to ask your questions about vegan life. \nI would love to have this also more open-ended so that other seasoned vegans can answer questions as well and we can do a bit of “group think” to help us come up with a variety of ideas for the questions. \nQuestions may be related to (but not limited by) the following:What recipe ideas do you have for… ?How do you stay vegan consistently for the long-term?Is it healthy to… ?What resources do you have for… ?I’ve been struggling with ___ and I’m looking for support on how to get through it.What do you eat in the course of a day?How do you handle family members who are negative about vegans? \nI look forward to seeing you there!

SUMMARY:Communicating and Setting Boundaries as a Vegan
DESCRIPTION:We know boundaries keep us healthy\, balanced\, strong\, and in control of our lives but… \nHow do we say no without feeling rude or guilty? How do I request something different without being complicated or stressful to the host? How do we partake in family get togethers where Uncle Ned doesn’t approve of our vegan choices? \nWhen we choose to live vegan\, it can cause some strange emotions and reactions from others and put us in a position where we’re not sure how to advocate for ourselves—restaurants\, family holidays\, strangers\, spouses\, friend get togethers. \nOftentimes our greatest barrier to our own freedom is our own mind telling us: “I’m a bother\, I’ll just go with the crowd” or “I’m asking too much\, I just shouldn’t come.” \nThis talk will address all of this and more. \nLearn to:• Recognize when you need a boundary• Identify what type of boundary you need (emotional\, physical\, intellectual\, material\, time)• Face the guilt\, fears\, and limiting beliefs that come along with setting boundaries (fear of failure\, fear of abandonment\, fear of rejection\, fear of loss\, etc.)• Confidently communicate your boundaries in a way that feels safe and comfortable to you• Handle any backlash that may come or people who push those boundaries \nBe prepared to take notes and ask any questions during the bonus Q&A time at the end.
