SUMMARY:Our First Post-Pandemic In Person Get Together!
DESCRIPTION:We are happy to announce our first in person get together in well over a year. We highly encourage those that attend to be fully vaccinated (including the two week “bake-in” period). We will still be socially distanced and outdoors (obviously!). Feel free to wear a mask if you so choose. \nElm Grove is a quiet\, shady\, hidden gem in the North End where we have had a history of get togethers. Feel free to bring your own food to enjoy\, but because of COVID concerns\, we will NOT be sharing food or drink. Since we will be socially distanced\, if you have chairs\, please bring them! \nShould the weather not cooperate\, this event will be converted to a Zoom meeting\, and we will try for another in person get together two weeks later. \nThis event is FREE.

SUMMARY:Memorial Day Raw Vegan Picnic Potluck
DESCRIPTION:Though not every dish will be high-carb\, many usually are. For one thing\, multiple people usually bring fruit\, myself included. \nWe’ll start eating at 12:50 PM. Feel free to bring extra snacks for before and after! \nWe will be located adjacent to the basketball court and tennis courts just south of the Discovery Park visitor center (see the main event page image here\, with direction labels). The visitor center address is 3801 W Government Way\, Seattle\, WA 98199. Good Google Maps pins to use: Discovery Park Tennis and Pickleball Courts; Visitor Center East Parking Lot; Discovery Park Visitor Center \nLet’s celebrate the warm season with some wonderful company\, fun games and activities\, and some vibrant raw living foods! \nThere had to be an end time picked\, so I chose it arbitrarily. It will end whenever the last of us decide to part ways. \nThis may be a U.S. holiday\, but the picnic is about like-minded people gathering to share a great meal\, conversations\, all while enjoying nature. We more than welcome our friends from Canada and other countries! \nIf the weather is especially horrendous\, we may cancel! However\, sprinkles and light rains don’t bother us much! The current forecast as of this writing looks nice. Stay tuned for more information. \nAbout Discovery Park: seattle.gov/parks/find/parks/discovery-park \nThis is advertised on Facebook as well: \nfacebook.com/events/[masked] \nIt’s set up as a private event there though\, so I’d have to send you an invite. Let me know your name as it appears on Facebook\, and I can do that. \nNewcomers are welcome! \nWell-behaved children are welcome! \nOnly well-behaved dogs are welcome\, as long as you honor local leash laws and park rules! \nWe look forward to seeing you there! \nWHAT TO BRING–PLEASE honor these requests\, so we are all on the same page: \n• All organic foods (some exceptions\, such as durian\, which we cannot find organic in the PNW). Certified organic or at least grown organically please (no pesticides and no GMO)! \n• All vegan foods\, meaning no animal products (meats\, eggs\, dairy\, gelatin\, honey\, or other bee products). \n• All raw foods\, meaning nothing cooked. Any processed foods (such as kale chips) should be labelled as raw (not processed/heated above 118 degrees F). \n• All natural! (Please no artificial chemicals or preservatives.) \n• We love plain raw organic fruits\, vegetables\, nuts\, seeds\, and herbs\, etc.! Gourmet-ish chefs often get creative with wonderful salads\, raw vegan entrees like lasagnas\, desserts\, etc. \n• These events are about abundance! If eaten alone\, one person’s food should fill at least 2-3 people (minimum–your food would completely fill you). \n• Please provide a detailed list of ingredients for whatever you bring. \n• When preparing your foods\, please use standard food prep practices (hand-washing prior to handling foods\, rinsing produce\, etc.). \n• If this is your first time and you don’t know what to bring\, consider a fresh organic fruit or vegetable salad with dressing on the side. Whole organic fresh fruits are the simplest and a safe bet! \n• For those who can prepare gourmet raw food recipes\, bring it on! This is a chance to share delicious raw food recipes with each other\, and further the raw food mission of health and peace\, as well as inspire others to create amazing gourmet raw vegan foods! \n• Please bring your own dishware and utensils\, including serving utensils. \nWHAT TO BRING–EXTRAS: \n• In addition to the potluck\, we like to have fun\, so feel free to bring Frisbees\, basketball\, volleyball\, tennis equipment\, etc. Plan to have fun! \n• If you prefer not sitting on the ground\, please bring blankets and/or chairs. \n• Bring bicycles for fun cruises around the park and down to the waterfront! \n• Are you an early bird who can get there at 11AM to hold the spot and/or help set-up? \n• In honor of DrummingInstead.org\, please consider bringing drums! \n• How about some other acoustic instruments to entertain our group?

SUMMARY:Vegan Brunch at Urban Cafe KC
DESCRIPTION:*******PLEASE READ ENTIRE DESCRIPTION******* \nIf you RSVP\, please commit to showing up. No-shows prevent others from enjoying yummy vegan food with friends. \nIf you have COVID-19 symptoms or have been in contact with someone who has COVID-19\, we don’t want you to attend if either of those things takes place. PLEASE cancel your RSVP under those circumstances. \nThis is an indoor event. Chef Clark will have one group of tables to accommodate 20 of us for this special vegan brunch event. Melanie will post our special menu as soon as we have the menu set. Rumor has it the chef is going to have biscuits and gravy as one of the menu items! Feel free to add suggestions/requests in the comments–the sooner the better. \nThe restaurant is not fully vegan but our food will be. We ask that you order solely from the special vegan brunch menu in the spirit of the event. \nThere is parking available behind the building. \nYou will need to wear your mask to enter the restaurant and any time you get up to use the restroom or to leave. You may take your mask off to eat while you are inside\, just know that there will be other folks sitting less than six feet away from you not wearing their mask. You know your own comfort level and you know how to seek out information regarding Covid-19. Do what is best for you. We recommend you also review KCMO’s Covid-19 FAQ here: https://www.kcmo.gov/city-hall/departments/health/coronavirus-covid-19-kcmo-information-and-response/reopen \nWe keep our events free so everyone is able to participate. Consider donating a few dollars to help our volunteers cover our Meetup site costs. Contribute online (https://secure.meetup.com/vegetarian-14/contribute/) or in person. Thank you for helping us connect veggie friends!

SUMMARY:Plant Powered Book Club: What's Missing from Medicine
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER: https://bit.ly/3xsPSEK \nIn May\, we’ll discuss What’s Missing from Medicine: Six Lifestyle Changes to Overcome Chronic Illness by Saray Stancic\, MD. In this inspirational book\, Dr. Stancic shares her personal struggle with multiple sclerosis and how\, after stumbling upon studies linking multiple sclerosis outcomes to diet and lifestyle\, she undertook a radically different approach to managing her illness. Today\, Dr. Stancic is active\, symptom-free\, and takes no medications for MS. She offers simple\, practical\, and affordable steps to take control of your health through plant-based nutrition\, daily movement\, stress management\, adequate sleep\, and human connection and urges the medical community to make these lifestyle upgrades an integral part of helping patients overcome chronic disease. \nPlease note that this is a book group discussion and will not include a report on the contents of the book. Those who have not read any of the book will find less value in the discussion than those who read at least some if not all of it. \nThis monthly series is facilitated by Lynn Diamond\, PPMNY’s Associate Network Director & Director of Community Education. \nRegistrants will receive a Zoom link on the day of the event.

SUMMARY:Monthly Online Dinner and Conversation about Food
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our online dinner and conversation about food. The Zoom link to the event will be visible to those who RSVP. \nOur get-together will last 40 minutes. Each person will have the opportunity to show and talk about what they’re having for dinner. Hold up your bowl or plate to the camera so we can see! After this\, we will go around again\, so that each person can take a few minutes to share anything that’s on their mind about food. This is an opportunity for the person speaking to share from the heart\, and for the others to listen deeply to what is being said. \nYou are welcome to prepare one of your favorite plant-based dishes\, ideally nutrient-dense whole foods with no added salt\, oil or sugar. Or if you don’t feel like cooking\, that’s fine too! \nLooking forward to seeing you online! If you are not able to attend\, please change your RSVP as soon as possible.

SUMMARY:Korean Temple Cuisine to K-pop: A Changing Food Landscape
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE: https://bit.ly/33xbUsk \nThe Republic of Korea is home to a remarkable coexistence of old traditions and rising trends from technology to music to food. Join PPMNY in honoring Asian Pacific American Heritage Month as we welcome back Dr. Eui Cheol Lee. Dr. Lee will discuss the plant-based origins of Korean temple food and how they have been impacted by tourism and cultural imports that affect the food landscape and eating habits in Korea. He will illustrate how the Korean population can reconnect with its plant-based traditions by tapping into the vast plant kingdom native to Korea. For those outside of Korea\, we’ll learn how to incorporate those traditions into our kitchens with local produce. The presentation will be followed by a culinary demo led by PPMNY Bronx Organizer Vivian Lee\, highlighting the rich ssam\, or “food wrapping” culture\, in Korean food. \nDr. Lee is the director of VegeDoctor\, an organization comprised of plant-based medical practitioners in Korea\, and head of the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Center at Sun Medical Hospital in Daejeon\, Korea. \nModerated by PPMNY public health intern Natalie Khoo\, RD\, CSP\, CDN\, CNSC. \nRegistrants will receive a Zoom link on the day of the event.
